Attendance

Report an Absence:

On time, daily attendance is a critical component of this educational process. New Mexico law dictates that:

Students between the ages of five (5) and eighteen (18) years of age are mandated to attend public school, private school, home school or a state institution.

The Albuquerque Public School District reports habitual truants to the Children’s Court Liaison office and to the State of New Mexico.

Attendance Policy

  • Teachers will take attendance each day and each class period. Parents/guardians can review their child’s attendance record through ParentVue online.
  • Students who miss more than 50% of the class period are considered absent.
  • A parent/guardian must notify the appropriate grade level using the online admit within 48 hours of the student’s absence. Phone calls will NOT be accepted. 
  • The school will attempt to contact the parent/guardian when a student has three (3) unexcused absences in any one class.
  • Following the 12th unexcused absence, a student is subject to being “W/F” (withdraw fail) from the class.
  • CHS consequences for unexcused absences include but are not limited to: Lunch detention, CHS attendance contract, loss of credit and loss of the privilege to participate or attend school activities. (consequences at the discretion of the administrator)
  • Consequences for attendance violation in NM law include: fines, and/or loss of NM Works Program monetary assistance.

Excused Absences:

Absences may be excused for the following reasons with appropriate documentation:

  • Illness (including chronic illness documented on a health plan, IEP or 504 plan)
  • Limited family emergencies; family deaths
  • Medical, health or legal appointments
  • Suspensions
  • Religious commitment
  • College visit (11th and 12th grade students)

ALL ABSENCES FOR OTHER REASONS ARE UNEXCUSED INCLUDING:

  • Non-school sponsored activities or trips
  • Family vacations outside of the normally scheduled school break

Excessive Absences

  • Excessive absences are defined as more than 5 days in a semester or 10 days in a year.
  • Schools will support students with interventions to help stop excessive absences.
  • School related activities (Cougar absences) that take a student out of class will not count toward excessive absence totals.
  • Schools will not allow a student to miss more than 10 school related absences per class per semester.
  • Schools may not suspend students for excessive excused or unexcused absences.
  • Schools may withdraw for absences only if the student has missed 10 days in a row, the parent has not contacted the school, and the school cannot reach the student or family to provide supports.
    • 2 unexcused absences – automated call to families
    • 5 unexcused absences – automated call. School staff must make contact with the family and schedule an appointment to team with the parent on strategies and support.
    • 10 unexcused absences – families will receive a written letter. Parents/guardians will need to meet with school staff to review prior strategies and develop a more intensive support plan.
    • Students that receive more than 10 unexcused absences may be referred to Juvenile Probation.

Make-Up Work

  • On the first day back to a class, students are responsible for requesting make-up assignments. Students will have the opportunity to complete the work in a period of time equal to the number of days absent unless other arrangements have been mutually agreed upon by the student and the teacher.
  • It is expected that students will take semester finals on the days that they are scheduled. Students will be permitted to make up finals if they are missed due to an excused absence as listed in the handbook. Requesting permission to take a final exam early is discouraged. Approval of such a request will rest with the teacher in consultation with the principal.
  • Teachers will need 24 hours from the time of the request to compile assignments when a student will be out of school three (3) or more consecutive days.
  • Makeup work for students with more than 10 unexcused absences in a year (5 in a semester) may be givev only after a parent attends an Parent/Teacher conference.

Tardy Policy

  • 5 Tardies – Counseling intervention
  • 10 Tardies – Office referral to administration. Office referrals will result in lunch detention, the more tardies, the more days of lunch detention. Missing lunch detention can lead to suspension.

APS Attendance Policy

Cell Phones / Personal Electronic Devices

Cell phones that are not permitted by teacher are subject to confiscation. Classroom cell phone policies will be enforced. APS policy will be followed.

Student Rights and Responsibilities

Dress Code

The APS Board of Education expects student dress and grooming to reflect high standards of personal conduct so that each student’s attire promotes a positive, safe and healthy atmosphere within the school. Student attire may not display or promote any drug, including alcohol or tobacco, sexual activity, violence, disrespect and/or bigotry towards any group.

Dress code is in effect starting with registration each school year.

Students and their parents/guardians have the responsibility to be aware of Cibola’s dress code and must conform to those requirements. The responsibility to interpret and enforce the policy rests with the administration.

Unacceptable Clothing & Accessories includes but is not limited to:

  • Excessively tight or revealing clothing including short shorts, short skirts, sheer shirts, low cut shirts, off the shoulder shirts, strapless shirts or dresses, or bra-like shirts. No midriff shirts above the belly button.
  • No sagging or baggy pants or wearing pants below the waist, including “low rise”, that allows underwear or skin to show.
  • Spiked jewelry, chains, belts with no more than 2” excess.
  • Gang, violence, or drug-related attire is not permitted.
  • Sunglasses are not permitted inside the building.
  • Pajamas, house slippers, or trench coats are not allowed.
  • Shoes must be worn at all times.
  • Hats – teachers reserve the right to not allow hats to be worn in their classroom.

APS Student Dress Policy

Parking Permits

Parking Permit Application

Parking permits will be sold, first to seniors, then juniors, then sophomores if space is available, on a first come, first serve basis. Parking permits will NOT be available to freshman at any time. Cost is $35. Permit must be visible at all times or the vehicle will be cited and/or towed. A student must follow all rules & regulations stipulated in the parking permit application. Students must not park at any time in the areas designated for faculty or visitor parking. Parking at school is a privilege; permits may be revoked without refund. Students parking in the lot next to the city skateboard park, the city bus station across the street, and Wal-Mart /Walgreens parking lots do so at their own risk.

Please note that parking on campus is a privilege, and ALL of the following steps must be completed prior to receiving a parking permit.

Step 1: Fill out application and attach all required documents. A legible photo copy of applicant’s driver’s license, current vehicle registration(s) and current proof of insurance must be attached or the application will not be processed. Students must make copies of the required documents on their own prior to submission.

  1. A copy of the Application Form filled out completely and signed by both parent and student.
  2. A Photocopy of your driver’s license. (It can be a provisional license but not a restricted license).
  3. A photocopy of your vehicle’s current (not expired) insurance.
  4. A photocopy of your vehicle’s current (not expired) registration.

Step 2: After your application is submitted and approved, a payment of $35.00 will be collected. Cash or check made payable to Cibola High School.

You will receive your parking permit upon application approval and payment of permit.
